THE MOUNTAIN MAN WHO CARVED A PATH THROUGH A MOUNTAIN

Dashrath Manjhi is also known as the “Mountain man”. He was a laborer in Gehlour village near Gaya. He carved a path through a mountain 360 foot long and 25 foot deep. For this big achievement, he became popular and called by the name of MOUNTAIN MAN. The motivation for this achievement came from the death of his wife due to the lack of medical care.

After her death, he was determined to make the path so that the distance between the Atri and Wazirganj could get reduced and hence the medical care could be easily accessed. He worked day and night singlehandedly for 22 years and remarkably shortened the distance from 70 km to 1 km. The mountain man got died in 2007 due to gall bladder cancer at the age of 73. He was given the state funeral by the government of Bihar.

The famous film maker Ketan Mehta called him the poor man’s Shan Jahan who made a documentary on his life. This film named “Manjhi” is produced by Sanjay Singh and is completely based on Manjhi’s life.
